What is happening in the spirits market
The spirits market is going through a pivotal period, with sales falling in both value and volume in a strained economic environment. Inflation, weaker purchasing power and geopolitical uncertainty are putting pressure on exports, a crucial growth driver for many producers.
Consumption habits are shifting: Europeans, and especially the French, are drinking less alcohol, favouring moderation, quality and drinking at home over bars and restaurants.
The market is still supported by several trends. Spirits tourism is booming in France, with almost 2 million visitors a year, creating direct sales and educating consumers. Innovation continues on a more measured scale, mostly range extensions, while limited editions, collaborations and premium products appeal to young adults. Environmental concerns are pushing more responsible packaging and production, and low- and no-alcohol alternatives reflect a search for healthier consumption.
The growing craze for limited editions
Limited editions reflect consumers' desire for exclusivity and unique experiences. Drawn by rarity, they seek bottles that tell a story, whether through numbered runs, unusual ageing or collaborations with artists or luxury brands. This fits the market's move upmarket, with rare ingredients and unique production methods.
Azor Gin, inspired by the Azores
A gin built on origin, storytelling and authenticity, meeting demand for exclusive, meaningful products.
Beefeater limited grapefruit edition
The iconic London gin with a modern, accessible grapefruit twist.
The quest for new taste experiences
Consumers are exploring spirits with innovative and unexpected flavours. Brands are experimenting with exotic ingredients and bold combinations, from tropical fruit infusions to blends of spices and herbs. This comes with the rise of ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails as an alternative to traditional spirits.
Get Menthe & Fruits Rouges (mint and red berries)
Ranked third-best launch of the year in France by NielsenIQ, combining minty freshness with fruity notes.
Blackberry Tennessee whiskey
The famous Tennessee whiskey reimagined in a bold blackberry version.
Creamy chocolate and pistachio liqueur
A creamy liqueur inspired by the Dubai chocolate trend.
The rise of no/low spirits
With responsible drinking on the rise, alcohol-free and low-alcohol spirits are gaining ground. Most of their consumers are not abstinent: nearly 80% also drink alcohol but are cutting back. Brands must adapt to declining alcohol consumption with products for well-being-minded consumers.
Citadelle 0.0 alcohol-free gin
A 0.0% version of the French gin, made by gentle hydrodistillation and natural extracts to keep the botanical flavour.
Alcohol-free Captain Morgan for mocktails
The brand's flavour profile in an alcohol-free version designed for cocktails.
Pure, natural flavours for premium experiences
Natural flavours without artificial additives increasingly appeal to consumers seeking authenticity and quality. Spirits brands are highlighting raw ingredients and more transparent production. In this back-to-basics dynamic, origin and ingredient traceability become key differentiators and reinforce a premium image.
Natural red berry vodka
A fully natural red-berry flavoured vodka highlighting ingredient transparency.
Clementine and mint gin
An Italian gin flavoured with clementine and mint, entirely natural with no added sugar, to be enjoyed neat or in a cocktail.
Spirits trends on social media
The spritz, constantly reinvented
The spritz is the most visible cocktail on Instagram, reinvented with new bases, fruity or floral pairings and ever more aesthetic presentation. Examples include limoncello and peach spritz, pomegranate spritz and rose and watermelon spritz.
Spirits inspired by pastry
More spirits draw on the world of pastry with indulgent profiles such as chocolate, coffee and caramel: warm, comforting notes. Examples include a tiramisu espresso martini, a chocolate-orange Manhattan and a caramel vodka espresso martini.
Exotic fruits, with passion fruit centre stage
Exotic fruits feature prominently in cocktail content, especially passion fruit. Valued for their intensity and freshness, they bring escape and modernity to cocktails and flavoured spirits: think a passion fruit jungle bird, pornstar martini or passion mule.
